Northern Pulp has delayed its cleanup process of Boat Harbour, Nova Scotia to spring 2021 due to the discovery of additional sludge at the bottom of its aeration lagoons.

CBC News reports that the shuttered pulp mill‘s cleanup, which was set to begin this fall, has been paused after an independent assessment of the lagoons this summer revealed an extra 194,000 cubic metres of sludge.

The province will conduct an investigation to determine if the sludge is from the mill’s effluent or if it’s “clean, pre-industrial sediment.”
