Fire destroys Waldun cedar mill

An early morning fire destroyed a Maple Ridge cedar mill on Sunday, leaving up to 60 people without jobs and managers uncertain they can rebuild.

According to a report by The Vancouver Sun, no one was injured in the fire at the Waldun Forest Products mill, which was reported by the lone night worker — a watchman — just after midnight Sunday.

The cause of the fire that engulfed the mill’s main production area and a nearby cedar chip pile is not known, said Mark Smitton, Maple Ridge assistant fire chief. Arson has not been ruled out, he said, although it is unlikely. An investigation continues.
