Stagnant lumber market keeps prices flat: Madison’s

There was a pause in demand as buyers waited to see if prices might erode. Players reported a two-tiered pricing structure opening up between sawmills and the distributors, as wholesalers with unfavourable contract positions and/or inventory levels got conspicuously aggressive with their numbers to entice buyers.

In the week ending April 12, the price of Western S-P-F 2×4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$452 mfbm. This is flat from the previous week when it was $452. That week’s price is flat from one month ago when it was $452 mfbm. Compared to the same week last year, when it was $350 mfbm, that week’s price is up by $102, or 29 per cent. Compared to two years ago when it was $1,096, that week’s price is down by $644, or 59 per cent.

In the week ending April 12, the price of Southern Yellow Pine East Side 2×4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was $380 mfbm. This is flat from the previous week when it was $380 mfbm. That week’s price is down by $24, or six per cent from one month ago when it was $404 mfbm. Compared to the same week last year, when it was $545 mfbm, that week’s price is down by $165, or 30 per cent. Compared to two years ago when it was $835, this week’s price is down by $455, or 54 per cent.
